Birdville ISD Student Named National Math Star

Birdville ISD is proud to announce that Oliver Gibbs from Holiday Heights Elementary has received one of the most prestigious math awards in the country.

Oliver was one of only 102 students in the United States to be named a National Math Star in 2025. Jameson Meeks from O.H. Stowe Elementary was also named a finalist for the award.

To receive this recognition, Oliver completed a multi-stage evaluation process that assessed his mathematical aptitude, eagerness for deeper Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) exploration, and the program’s potential impact on his trajectory. In addition to the evaluation process, Oliver also scored in the top 2-3 percent on a nationally-normed math test.

“We are incredibly proud of Oliver for being named a National Math Star,” said Lisa Walker, Holiday Heights Elementary principal. “To stand out among thousands of young minds across the country is a true testament to Oliver’s passion for learning and problem-solving.”

By receiving this award, Oliver will now receive more than $100,000 in mentorship, resources and enrichment opportunities for over 10 years or until high school graduation. Launched in 2023, National Math Stars identifies mathematically extraordinary second and third-graders and provides long-term, individualized support to help them make the most of their talents.

The 2025 cohort is the first to include students from six newly added states – Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin – in addition to those from Texas. National Math Stars supports high-performing math students beginning in elementary school, and these new learners will join programs in Texas already underway.

“These students represent the brilliance and potential thriving in classrooms across Texas,” said Monica Brewer, Texas Statewide Coordinator, Gifted/Talented Education. “Their selection by National Math Stars affirms what educators see every day: young minds capable of extraordinary mathematical thinking. We’re proud to support them as they begin this exciting journey.”
